One thing I learned from working around truck service is that the first few minutes can affect everything that happens afterward.
It’s tempting to start immediately, especially when the shop is busy. But if I begin without understanding the truck, the reported problem, and what has already been checked, I can easily spend more time correcting assumptions later.
At MHC Kenworth, I’ve developed a simple pre-job routine that helps me start with a clearer picture.
I Read the Information Before Touching the Truck
I want to know why the truck is here.
I look for the actual concern rather than building my own theory immediately.
The basic questions are:
- What problem was reported?
- When does it happen?
- Is it constant or intermittent?
- Has anything already been checked?
- Was recent work performed?
- Are there additional concerns?
Sometimes one small detail completely changes where I start.
I Confirm I’m Working With the Right Truck
On a busy day, several similar Kenworth trucks may be in the shop.
Before doing anything important, I verify the identifying information relevant to the job.
Depending on the situation, that can include:
- VIN
- Model
- Unit number
- Configuration
- Mileage
- Other identifying details
It sounds basic, but basic checks prevent expensive mistakes.
I Read the Customer’s Description Carefully
A customer doesn’t need to use technical terminology for their description to be useful.
Something like:
It happens mostly when the truck is loaded.
can be more valuable than someone trying to guess which component is causing the problem.
I separate the symptom from the assumed cause.
That’s an important distinction.
I Check Previous Work When It’s Relevant
If the truck has related history available, I want to know about it.
I’m especially interested when:
- The same concern appeared before
- A related component was recently replaced
- Previous diagnostics were performed
- The problem returned shortly after other work
History doesn’t automatically tell me the answer.
It gives me context.
I Don’t Let Previous Notes Decide the Diagnosis
There’s another side to checking history.
If someone previously suspected a particular problem, it’s easy to inherit that assumption.
I try to treat previous information as evidence, not a conclusion.
If the current symptoms point somewhere else, I follow what the truck is actually showing now.
I Look at the Entire Situation
Before focusing on one component, I take a broader look.
Depending on the job, I may notice something that wasn’t obvious from the original description.
The goal isn’t to invent additional problems.
It’s to avoid becoming so focused on one theory that I ignore useful information directly in front of me.
I Make Sure I Understand the Job
If the work description is unclear, I ask before starting.
I’d rather spend a minute clarifying:
Are we diagnosing the cause or performing a specific approved repair?
than discover later that I misunderstood what was expected.
I Think About What I’ll Need
Before getting deep into the job, I consider whether I already know I’ll need:
- Specific tools
- Diagnostic equipment
- Technical information
- Parts information
- Additional assistance
- A particular work area
Preparing early can prevent unnecessary interruptions later.
I Check Parts Before Disassembly When It Makes Sense
If a job clearly requires a particular component, knowing its situation beforehand can be useful.
I don’t want to get halfway through something and only then discover an unexpected parts issue that could have been identified earlier.
That doesn’t mean every job needs everything sitting beside the truck before work begins.
It means thinking one step ahead.
Safety Comes Before Convenience
A busy shop can create pressure to save seconds.
That’s exactly when shortcuts become tempting.
Before starting, I make sure I’m following the applicable procedures for the work I’m about to perform.
Familiarity with a task doesn’t make safety less important.
If anything, routine work is where it’s easiest to become too comfortable.
I Establish a Starting Point
Before changing anything, I want to understand the current condition.
If possible, I want to know:
What is happening now?
Then, after the appropriate work:
What changed?
Without a clear starting point, it’s harder to evaluate the result.
I Avoid Ordering Parts Based on a Guess
A symptom can point toward several possible causes.
If identification or diagnosis is still uncertain, I don’t want a guess turning into an unnecessary component request.
I verify as much as reasonably possible first.
Correct identification saves time for the technician, parts department, and customer.
I Write Down Important Findings
I don’t rely on remembering every detail until the end of the day.
If something matters, I record it while it’s fresh.
That could include:
- What I observed
- What I checked
- Relevant results
- Something unusual
- The next step
Good notes become especially useful if the job continues later or another person needs context.
I Know When to Ask Another Technician
There’s no benefit in spending hours stuck simply because I want to solve everything independently.
If I’ve reached something unfamiliar, I organize what I already know before asking for another opinion.
Instead of:
I can’t figure this out.
I can explain:
Here’s the reported symptom, here’s what I’ve checked, and here’s what I’m seeing now.
That makes the conversation much more productive.

Before getting deep into a service job, I check:

✅ Relevant truck information.
✅ Related history when useful.
✅ Scope of the job.
✅ Applicable technical information.
✅ Tools or equipment I may need.
✅ Potential parts considerations.
✅ Safety requirements.
✅ Clear starting condition.
Five Minutes Can Save an Hour
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that starting immediately isn’t always starting quickly.
A few minutes spent understanding the MHC Kenworth service job can prevent me from following the wrong assumption, searching for information halfway through the work, or discovering that I misunderstood the original concern.
Know the truck.
Understand the symptom.
Check the context.
Prepare what you need.
Then start the actual work with a clear idea of what you’re trying to accomplish.
For me, that’s much faster than figuring everything out after the truck is already apart.
